Born: April 13, 1743 Birthplace: Shadwell, Virginia Died: July 4, 1826 Political Party: Democratic-Republican In Office: March 4, 1801 - March 4, 1809 Vice Presidents:
-Aaron Burr 1801-1805 (Backstabbing son of a gun)
-George Clinton 1805-1809
In a president's term, they do much to help the Country and hope that by leading the country they further propogate the country's success in how the country operates. Thomas Jefferson, the mind that wrote the Declaration of Independence, doubled the size of the United States, as well as became famous for having such a controversial mind during his life, made some very amazing strides to afford his country the best possible life he could give to it. After all his actions are through, both positive and negatively effecting ones, Jefferson still would manage to receive an "A-" for his tactics in leading the United States of America through such immense trials that tested his own liberty and sense of justice.
Jefferson led many new ideas into his presidency to help benefit the Nation. Many of those ideas revolved around trying to reduce the Federalist Supremacy that was left after the previous presidency and to help counter it. Things such as the Alein and Sedition Act, taxation on objects such as alchohol, National Debt, and the large number of enlistment and government style officials were left behind as a result of the Federalist rule. In this reduction of Federalist laws and presence Jefferson highly suceeded in his goals. He managed to repeal the Alien and Sedition acts, revoked the taxes on many things, and substantially reduced the national debt. Jefferson's idea to lower the power of the government was ultimately successful with his abilities to decrease the national "debt-racking" army by choosing different things to defend the nation, but lowering the manpower. In the end Jefferson managed to accomplish his goals with the good will of the people in mind.
During Jefferson's term, his congress was very close to him in how they would agree on certain subjects as the two main people that would argue those facts against him, Alexander Hamilton and John Adams, were ultimately out of power due to extensive circumstances. Alexander Hamilton, who had very large goals in mind when it came to the nation's finances, was shot and killed by Aaron Burr in a duel in which Alexander took part in but refused to fire because of his hatred of dueling. John Adams retired after his term as President and never took up the post again as a leader of the Federalist party. Therefore with no single person to lead the Federalist party the Democratic-Republicans had little opposition in their work with the government.
Through all of Jefferson's actions during his role as president, one action easily helped stand above many actions of all the presidents and is still known today as one of the best Unconstitutional action that Jefferson took in his term. This would be the Louisianna Purchase, by far the largest puchase of land in the United Sataes at any one point of time which doubled the size of the US as well as managed to be purchased at an alarmingly low rate of three cents per acre or 15 million all together. Although this price was over the 10 million dollar budget that he had previously set up, it also included a huge expanse of western America of which was currently owned but not inhabited by France. Therefore, by taking action we managed to increase the size of our nation with a chance of the lifetime. So although this act was against what Jefferson beleived, he made the absolutely right choice in the end and purchased the great expanse. Alternatively speaking, Jefferson's strategies to avoid war were very lacking when he thought to set up the Embargo Act. This act, although forced the opposing nations to take action after a period of time, it still halted the export of goods from America and nearly completely crippled the American Economy.
In Jefferson's ending speech he said that, "We are all Federalists, we are allRepublicans," and this statement has forged the path for many future presidencies in how they veiwed the American Ideals for their Party. This statement helped to describe the way that Jefferson led his highly varied way of leading the American Government. For while Jefferson was Democratic-Republican, many actions he took contradicted what he had previously said was right in favour of the opposing Federalist actions. This kind of "wishy-washy" action helped to describe how practical Jefferson really was and that although each party had their own ideas, some actions are better to take in some cases than in others. Representaion of this bahavior could be Jefferson's Louisianna Purchase where he had to take quick action that was "Unconstitutional." This action led to many Presidencies to take practical actions over the polical action.
As an obvious effect, the Country was much better off than in the start of his term. The country had much larger land expanse, a lowered national debt, lowered taxes, a smaller national government, and most importantly better and more well rounded Government. America's situation, although a bit awkward with interaction with France and Britian's great war, was much better and more under control. All of the represented states were better under the union and felt better about the country as a whole. The statement thus stands that Jefferson got the grade of an "A-" because of his leadership role of president during the harsh and bumpy road of American History.
